Our Story
1993
The seed of our enterprise was planted in 1993 when The Law Society asked our Principal, Irfan Mahmood, for help in developing skills-based learning for aspiring Solicitors. It wanted students to show more than just academic knowledge, they had to develop and use skills that made them effective.
This struck a chord with Irfan, who had himself faced challenges as a student to keep up with his peers in a fierce academic setting. He realised that the only way to distinguish himself was to build a compelling profile, inside and outside the classroom. His new approach had opened the door to winning prizes through school, undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
"a compelling profile, inside and outside the classroom"
As a University Lecturer and Head of Department, Irfan consistently infused academic education with practical skills development, including debating and wider writing skills. Jointly working as a Resident Tutor, he personally mentored students facing personal development challenges. He provided confidence coaching and developed their resilience and relationship skills.
The present day
Though also having an elite career in the corporate sector (as a Consultant, Solicitor at a City Law Firm and Regional Chairman at Coutts & Co.), Irfan has stayed at the forefront of training and coaching. He has spent his entire career working with young people to drive their development. This is a founding principal of Distinction Coaching – we believe that the complete development of young people in their Golden Decade needs to look beyond just their academic performance to stand them apart from others.
This is our passion.
